You won’t get a day happier than a wedding day. Everyone suited and booted, great food, beautiful flowers, not to mention a whole lot of love in one room. But behind the scenes, is everything running smoothly? And how do the bride and groom (or any other members of the wedding party for that matter) feel about how their day at Gate Street Barn went and the choices they made now that it’s all over?

We spoke to 5 past Gate Street Barn couples (and one pair of bride’s parents) to find out why Gate Street was the perfect wedding venue for them. Here, they share tips on what made planning their weddings that little bit easier and tell us what they think sets Gate Street apart from the rest.

The Mid-Week Wedding

“When you are at the barn, it is so enclosed from the rest of the world that it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is.”

Megan and Benjamin Stacey – 5th August 2019

On making things easier…

The team were so helpful throughout the whole wedding process – however big or small our queries were, they were more than happy to answer them and put our minds at ease. We could drop our drinks and props at the venue a few days before the wedding which was incredibly handy as it meant there were no last-minute worries. We had quite a lot of props too – ladders, photo displays, sweetie cart, lanterns etc – but the staff packed everything up for us after the wedding and left it in the kitchen ready for us to collect the next morning.

On the facilities…

The onsite accommodation included a gorgeous farmhouse where we stayed on the night of our wedding. The kitchen had Emma Bridgewater mugs and Cowshed hand soap and the bride’s room, attached to the barn, is perfect. There’s a private bathroom which meant that my bridesmaids could help me with my dress and I was able to touch up my makeup throughout the day and have time on my own if I needed it. It was such a relaxing environment.

On having a weekday, summer wedding…

We met in the summer, got engaged in the summer so decided to get married in the summer! We chose a Monday wedding but our save the dates were sent out 11 months before the big day so our guests were given plenty of notice. We got nothing but positive feedback about our decision and had the wedding of our dreams. Plus, the best weather day of that week was the day we got married – 24 degrees and sunny. Wedding venue prices on weekends are much more expensive compared to week days – why break the bank on the happiest day of your life? As long as you are marrying your best friend, in the presence of your loved ones, that’s all that matters. I remember walking down the aisle with my dad, the sun was beaming through the barn and it made me think of loved ones who couldn’t be there but were present in thoughts and spirit.

On their top wedding tips…

We had a spreadsheet to keep track of the budget – it was our bible! And we recommend that you take your time all day. It’s the most exciting, wonderful day of your life so don’t rush anything. We made sure we had 10 minutes to ourselves straight after the ceremony to catch up.

The Winter Wedding

“It was love at first sight with Gate Street Barn. It’s just so unique and magical in winter, with all the luxury of a hotel.”

Caroline and Mark Pardy – 16th November 2019-12-19

On having a winter wedding…

It wasn’t a problem. The barn was heated throughout and we didn’t have to go outside to get from one part of the barn to the other. We always envisaged a wedding with cosy log fires in a magical setting that showcased the beautiful natural countryside and with pheasants in abundance and Longhorn cattle in the next field, Gate street Barn exuded this. With the evening drawing in early, the barn just lit up with sparkling lights and cosy spaces throughout. There was an open fire pit for toasting marshmallows and our guests loved that we could have a sparkler send off!

On how the day went…

We asked for an early start – 6:30 am for our 1pm wedding – so that we could decorate the venue and transform it into our forest themed wedding. The team were great at accommodating this, meeting us with a smile so early in the morning! The team kept in contact with us throughout the day, ensuring that everything was happening as we had asked and that all the guests were happy. Gate Street have a superb list of vendors but we also introduced a few of our own and they all worked seamlessly together on the day. You really couldn’t tell they had just met that morning!

On the accommodation…

Everyone who stayed at the on-site accommodation couldn’t sing its praises enough. A few couples went on an early morning walk to take in the breath taking views before tucking into a cooked breakfast in the main farmhouse and then checking out. This, and the attached bridal suite were really important to us.

On their top wedding tips…

Leave plenty of time to book your main vendors – registrar, catering, florist, photographer, band, dress, suits and cake. Once you have these sorted, the rest is easier to organise. And if spreadsheets aren’t your thing, we found a fantastic app called Bridebook to keep your arrangements in one place, manage your budget, guest list, vendors and so on.

The Spring Wedding

“The surrounding gardens at Gate Street looked stunning and full of colour which gave us the perfect back drop for our photos.”

Holly and Mahammed Younes – 17th April 2019

On having a spring wedding…

Everything at that time of year is beginning to bloom and we were spoilt for choice when it came to our flowers as there are so many gorgeous pastel tones to choose from. The weather also starts to get better in the spring time too and we totally lucked out on the day as we had 25-degree sunshine which made the day even more perfect.

On choosing Gate Street…

We instantly fell in love with it from the moment we viewed it. We wanted a venue where we could have the ceremony and celebrations under one roof and Gate Street fitted the bill perfectly. The barn itself has a really romantic chapel-like feel and because the rooms flow so well it created an intimate and relaxed setting for all 130 of our guests.

On what stood out…

Planning a wedding, although amazing, can be quite stressful but the team at Gate Street were so supportive and organised throughout which really helped remove some of that stress and keep our planning on track. We got married on a Wednesday and were made to feel just as special as anyone getting married on the days before or after us.  The team went above and beyond on the day to make sure it was perfect – they co-ordinated everything beautifully and nothing was ever too much trouble. Our guests couldn’t stop talking about how wonderful everything was. I (Holly) had some last minute nerves before walking down the aisle and India really helped to calm me down and made sure I was ok. I really appreciated that.

On their top wedding tips…

Remember it’s your day, don’t get caught up in what you think others will prefer. And utilise the team at Gate Street – they are so wonderful and they are there to help you create your dream day. Never be afraid to ask them questions.

The Sunday Wedding

“Our chosen Friday date to get married at Gate Street was already booked. But it turns out, Sunday 1st September 2019 was 8 years to the day of our first kiss – this was fate!”

Sarika and David Fraser – 1st September 2019

On the Gate Street team…

I (Sarika) would often call to confirm details – if I called three times a day it was not a problem. I was always greeted with the same warm welcome. I would ask for random advice on things like ideas for the table plan and I felt like I was talking to friends. The team never made me feel silly for asking, they simply gave me their opinion. The team contacted us a couple of months before the wedding to take down details of all our suppliers and run through timings. This was something I thought I would have to manage on my own so I was really impressed. She also spent two hours meeting with the florist I brought in independently which really goes above and beyond.

On the morning of the wedding…

I (Sarika) was made to feel at ease from the moment I arrived. The team greeted me and told me where they would be if I needed them. For example, a stray balloon had made its way to the top of the barn and the team got together and managed to rescue it! Moments before I was about to walk down the aisle, I needed two minutes to compose myself and they made me feel relaxed and stayed with me.

On Gate Street Barn as a venue…

The great thing about Gate Street Barn is that you can leave it as it is – it doesn’t need a lot of work – but you can also throw hundreds of flowers at it and put your own stamp on it. It has the same standards as a 5-star hotel in terms of its service, attention to detail, the fact that it is well-maintained and the location is just right too. I love the fact that there is more than one indoor area and that the outdoor area is large enough for games but not so large that you lose your guests.

On their top wedding tips…

If you’re having a photo booth (or any extras), make sure you let people know with signs as not everyone knew we had a photo booth. Also, flowers can be re-used around the venue – décor for the ceremony can double up as a centre piece.

The Autumn Wedding

“The drinks reception could be outside but we could also use the log burners inside to help create our rustic ski theme when the evening drew in.”

Laura and Darren Gallagher – 14th September 2019

On why they chose Gate Street Barn…

Having met on a ski season, a rustic barn like this was the ideal choice for us, topped off by the beautiful green surroundings, making it the ideal ‘escape from the city to the country’ wedding we dreamed of.

On the support and help of the Gate Street Barn team…

The team was helpful with understanding what we wanted from our day and recommending suppliers that best suited our needs. She helped us choose our caterers but we also found the brochure helpful as this had a list of suppliers to choose from who already knew the venue well. This made decision making much easier for us. In the days leading up to our wedding, the team let us bring over all our favours, seating plan, drinks etc and they worked around us – the flexibility was great. We wanted to play a game on the bar that we used to play in our ski season days and the bar staff played the game with our guests, several of whom commented on this during the evening.

What the parents of the bride thought…

Gate Street Barn surpassed our expectations because it has so many different spaces which we were able to use to the fullest as the weather on the day was so amazing. Guests were outside both before and after the wedding breakfast and well into the evening. For our catering, we used Pesto – the staff were so helpful and quietly efficient and the food was simply delicious. Nothing was too much trouble and the setting of the dessert station was incredible and commented on by many guests. This was a very special day and we all had a wonderful time.
